How it Works: Power Purchase Agreements and Performance Guarantees
Mondial pays for all the costs for commercial-scale solar systems and sells the generated energy to earn a steady return on its investment. We have broken two important barriers to renewable energy:
- Upfront cost: we pay all the upfront costs associated with design and installation on large-scale systems.
- Technology and sunshine risk: we get paid for delivered energy. We have the risk if the solar panels don’t perform as expected.
Typically, we have been approached by a renewable energy manufacturer or installer regarding a specific project.
- To approve the manufacturer/installer for a Mondial project, we look for an established reputation and a performance guarantee.
- From the customer, we look for creditworthiness and ability to commit to a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
We then negotiate a PPA with the customer.
With a Power Purchase Agreement and a performance guarantee in hand, we fund the costs of the installation of the renewable energy hardware.
Remote telemetry enables us to monitor the performance of the equipment and bill only for the energy actually delivered.
Any performance issues are immediately recognized and referred to the installers.
To date, we have focused on solar thermal technology, as we believe it to be the most commercially viable technology in North America — the "low-hanging fruit" of alternative energy.
In North America, energy produced with renewable technologies other than solar thermal currently costs more than the displaced conventional energy. However, we are open to other technologies, and welcome proposals if similar financial returns can be achieved.
To date, Mondial Energy has focused on the North American marketplace. In Canada, proposals must meet the criteria for National Resources Canada's ecoEnergy for Renewable Heat program funding.
We welcome international proposals.
